F1 vs Le Mans Hypercars
F1 cars generate around 1000 Horse Power from a 1.6L V6 turbo hybrid, unless your Fernando
While LMH cars are limited to a 670 HP, but the engine design is open meaning a team like Toyota has a 3.5 L twin-turbocharged petrol V6 with a hybrid system in their car while Alpine uses a 4.5 litre V8.
When it comes to assists
F1 has DRS which allows drivers to open the rear wing when within 1 second of the car ahead allowing for an easier pass, most of the time. HyperCars use to be able to utilize their hybrid power systems as a push-to-pass assist, however they can now only deploy power from the front axle when above 75 miles per hour eliminating a traction advantage in low speed corners.
When it comes to the grid 20 F1 cars make the grid from 10 teams while LMH shares the grid with other classes including LMP2 and GT cars which are much slower than HyperCars despite being step above this GT4 featured on my show Hot Laps link in bio.
When looking at performance it’s not that close as it was when Hypercar was LMP1
Around Spa the hyper car pole was this year was 2:02.7 while in F1 pole was 1:44.2
Both being far off of the 2020 Porsche LMP1 and Mercedes F1 lap times back in which were in the 1:41s
F1 is far more spectator friendly despite Hypercars racing in a championship with nearly twice as many cars going around the track, simply because they compete in endurance races, and it’s much easier to be invested in a two hour F1 race than a 6,8 or 24 hour endurance race
The world endurance championship takes place over the course of 7 races while F1 has currently 22 grand prix’s with that number increasing all the time
While it may seem like the Hypercars don’t get to race as much, the winning HyperCar at lemans this year raced 3230 miles over the course of 24 hours while F1 raced roughly 3600 miles over the course of the entire season.
